2023 Training Forms
RSL ONLINE TRAINING SESSIONS
All RSL training will be completed online this year using the EdPuzzle platform. Click the links below to be taken to the training. You MUST answer all questions and click the SUBMIT button at the end of each course in order to get credit. If you do not score 70% or higher, you will be required to re-train.
**Please note - it is recommended that you use the CHROME internet browser for completing your training. We have had reports of videos "freezing" on other browsers**

Referee Training Session- required by the RSL to be completed annually to become a Referee.
Stroke and Turn Training Session - required by the RSL to be completed annually to become a Stroke and Turn Official.
Starter Training Session - required by the RSL to be completed annually to become a Starter. ***We are receiving feedback that the video says "Take Your Mark" instead of "Take Your Marks". This video was completed PRIOR to this rule change. There is a note at the beginning of the training reminding ALL starters that they should be practicing and using the new "Take Your Marks".
Scorekeeper and Computer Operator Training Session- required by the RSL to be completed annually to become a Scorekeeper.
Head Timer Training Session - required by the RSL to be completed annually to become a Head Timer.
Clerk of Course Training Session - required by the RSL to be completed annually to become a Clerk of Course.
2023 Completed Training
After completing in person RSL training, please complete the Officials Registration on the RSL website in order to be considered certified.

2023 Waiver Requests for USAS/VHSL Trained Positions
As in the past years, for certain positions that have undergone the trainings provided by USA Swimming or the Virginia High School League, a waiver request can be submitted to the RSL by using the link to submit their forms and documentation.
NOTE > If you are a USA official, submitting your membership card does NOT qualify you. You need to look to the top right, click on Officials, click My Official History and submit a screenshot of THAT page with your current certifications on it.
NOTE > If you are submitting a VHSL request, you MUST include you name (found in the upper right corner) in your screenshot or your request will not be approved.

Requirements by Position
Scorekeeper/Computer Operator, Clerk of Course and Head Timer
- Must attend RSL training annually
- Must attend RSL training annually
- While not required, it is HIGHLY SUGGESTED that new starters shadow an experience starter for at least ½ of a meet that includes forwards and backwards starts.
- Must attend RSL training annually
- While not required, it is HIGHLY SUGGESTED that new stroke and turn judges shadow an experienced judge for at least ½ of a meet.
Referee
- Must attend RSL training annually
- All Referees/Admin Referees are required to attend the annual RSL Rules Update meeting. This meeting will be held on a date TBD via Zoom and will be recorded. If unable to attend LIVE, Referees will be required to watch online. Each team MUST have representation at this meeting.
- While not required, it is HIGHLY SUGGESTED that Referees shadow an experienced Ref for at least ½ of a meet and/or fill the admin ref position.
Requirements by Position
Head Scorekeeper, Clerk of Course and Head Timer
- Combined into one session – will be certified for all 3 positions
- NEW trainee: MUST attend an in-person training session
- If trained in 2021, do not need to attend but it is strongly encouraged
- IF you attend the in-person training, you can be considered a “trainer” and can train other members of your team throughout the season.
Computer Operators
- At least ONE computer operator per team MUST be Head Scorekeeper Trained

- NEW trainee: MUST attend an in-person training session
- If trained in 2021, do not need to attend but it is strongly encouraged
- While not required, it is HIGHLY SUGGESTED that new starters shadow an experience starter for at least ½ of a meet that includes forwards and backwards starts.
- IF you attend the in-person training, AND you were also trained last season, you can be considered a “trainer” and can train other members of your team throughout the season.
- NEW trainee: MUST attend an in-person training session AND complete www.strokeandturn.com (certificate at end must be submitted to training committee: 2022 RSL www.strokeandturn.com Certificate Submission)
- If attended the Zoom training in 2021, MUST attend an in-person training session but do not need to complete www.strokeandturn.com
- While not required, it is HIGHLY SUGGESTED that new stroke and turn judges shadow an experienced judge for at least ½ of a meet.
Referee
- NEW trainee: MUST attend an in-person training session AND the Referee Meeting on June 11th
- If attended the Zoom training in 2021, MUST attend the June 11th Referee Meeting
- While not required, it is HIGHLY SUGGESTED that Referees shadow an experienced Ref for at least ½ of a meet and/or fill the admin ref position.
- If you CANNOT attend the June 11th meeting, you MUST send either an admin ref or experienced stroke and turn official in your place. Each team MUST have representation at this meeting.
